Christian Divorce Lawyer – Hypocrite?

Should a Christian be a divorce lawyer?

I have struggled with this for many, many years.  (Frankly, I still have doubts).

I don’t know.

But in this fallen world, people still need my help.  So I keep going.

This post isn’t justification for my career.  If you think it’s hypocritical for a Christian to be a divorce attorney, I am not going to try and change your mind.

But if you genuinely want to know how I get up every morning and faithfully do my job, I’ll share through some of my favorite Bible verses.

The Light Shines In the Darkness, and the Darkness Has Not Overcome It – John 1:5

Divorce is an ugly business filled with hate, lies and greed.  $50 Billion+ a year industry!  See, e.g., Divorce Corp.

But every day, through my work, I encounter God’s wondrous mercy and grace.  I have met the most amazing clients in my 22+ years.  In their most difficult times, they are able to get up, go to work, raise children.

My clients are evidence that the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

In His omniscient way, God picked me for the marriage ministry.

As a divorce attorney, I am actually in a good position to discourage divorce.

It doesn’t happen every day, but I have actually “saved” marriages by discouraging divorce when appropriate.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.  1 Corthinthians 10:31

In short, I am a sinner, and not just because I am a divorce attorney.

But we are saved by God’s grace, and Jesus Christ has paid our debts.  In this world, everything I do is for God’s glory.

My purpose as a family law attorney is to guide clients through difficult transitions with as little destruction as possible.

The Lord has called me to serve Him and shine His light in this field.  So I will keep doing it.
